Vince & Sam Just Won the Amazing Race Asia!

November 23, 2008

Vince, Chris and Ryan on Elgin Street, Hong KongThis Thursday night it became official:  despite starting with a four hour penalty on the final leg, Vince and Sam finished off Number One in the third season of The Amazing Race:  Asia!  It couldn’t have happened to a better couple of guys, with a whole Comedy club routing throughout the season for them.

Vince is a friend through TakeOut Comedy, where he performs with People’s Liberation Improv comedy troupe.  As you can imagine, we didn’t make it any easier for him not to reveal the results of the race over the past three months he’s been home since shooting for the show last finished.

Enduring jibes of “It’s a shame that when you win they won’t let you talk about the show,” or a series of the Embarassing Fact improv game, when Vince had to start with “I just lost the amazing race…” while the other troupe members came up with witty one liners in front of the massive Friday night crowd, Vince kept tight lipped on the results of the show.  It was not until the finale aired last Thursday night that any of us at the club knew he truly won!

A big Congratulations goes out to Sam and Vince for their huge victory.

Still a Non-Believer

November 8, 2008

The countdown has begun – for about the 300th time.  This time they’re saying it’ll be different, but we’ve been teased like this before only to be let down with unfulfilled dates and silent speakers.  Will this November 23rd be different?  Will Chinese Democracy hit the streets or will the Axel break down once again and postpone this release beyond the foreseeable future.

What is to be the first Guns N’ Roses studio album since 1991’s Use Your Illusion(s) were released, “Chinese Democracy” is being touted as “one of the most highly anticipated albums in music history” (Gary Arnold, Senior Entertainment Officer for Best Buy) – which may very well be true:  depending on how you look at the numbers.  Let’s dissect this claim like an economist… Read the rest of this entry ?

Vote Heard ‘Round the World

November 7, 2008

It’s often hard when you’re in America to understand the magnitude that domestic decisions have on the rest of the world.  This is not a critique of America or Americans:  it is purely a statement of fact.  Americans are not exposed to as much international media or culture as other nations are, as the strength of its domestic industries creates huge barriers for foreign productions to enter, and the fact that a single language, currency and history covers such a large span of both population and geography, with so few bordering countries to top it all, makes America a very isolated nation.

The election of Barack Obama to the role of President was of course a huge issue domestically; it was also a major act that resonated to people around the world.  Understanding how difficult it can be to see what ways the outside world views the context and significance of the event, I decided to grab both of the Free newspapers here in Hong Kong on my walk into work this morning – so that I could then display a collection of all the articles, both in English and Chinese, that were published regarding this event which in any other country would be 99.9% a domestic issue.

Below is a gallery of these articles, with a link to the article that is large enough that once can read the content of each if he or she so wishes.  If you have similar posts on your site from the area that you live in, please post a link below so readers can access those stories as well.

It’s OBAMA!

November 5, 2008

Quite the historic day today, and everybody around the world seems to be celebrating save for a handful of red patches scattered about the central North American continent.  Apart from trying to editorialize on the significance or pride that many have associated with this special occasion, which many professional reporters, authors, teachers and school children will surely be doing this week, and while not trying to diminish those grand aspects of the election outcome, I want to take this time and space to direct your attention to what has to be the most overlooked campaign-song-that-should-have-been of any modern day election.

Motörhead is not a band most immediately think of when they think America (because they’re British), democracy (because majorities decide to turn it off), or politics (as the handlebar mustache was out of style in 1873), but the titular track from their 1979 album Bomber would have done just the trick for the campaign this year.

I had the idea in mind to make a quality video with the song and put it up online, but time just has not permit.  Fortunately someone else has already created an adequate video that conveys the same point.  Maybe with enough support this could usher in the beginning of an era for White House theme songs…
