Do They Eat Turkey in Hong Kong?

Happy Thanksgiving America! Around the holidays people tend to begin making an effort to get in touch with those they have not seen ina long time; and, given my living on the opposite side of the planet, that often involves a lot of people contacting me out of the blue. Invariably, the conversation will cover the typical reconnection Q&A, as well as the standard string of “What’s Hong Kong like?” questions. Don’t hesitate to ask them: you know you want to…

A big question every year is always “Do they eat turkey in Hong Kong?”, to which I reply, “Well, not really … Besides, we don’t really have ovens…”

And the worst way to meet your neighbors is during the fire evacuation after your turkey fryer oil catches the propane flame and sets the building ablaze in a french-fry-smell-of-a-wonderland.

But I saw this sign at the Festival Walk shopping mall in Kowloon Tong selling turkey for the holidays … Or at least, I THINK that’s what they are selling…
